Sputum cytology and bronchoscopy examinations are believed can help to detect pre central airway lung cancer, said scientist from the University of Hong Kong
A group from the faculty of medicine of the university has conduct the study by examining over 400 lung cancer high-risk cases from as early as 2002 which consist of smokers aged 40 or above, who smoked more over 20 packs of cigarettes a year. Sputum examinations followed by bronchoscopies were done among the cases.
The result illustrated astonishing facts that none of the central airway cancer cases was fail to spot by sputum cytology. More than 46 percent of people analyzed with lung cancer were in early stages.
The faculty's Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor Lam Bing said Tuesday at a press conference that prognosis for lung cancer was poor as most patients have difficult stage cancer condition when diagnosed and cure for such circumstance are usually not work that much
Lam said, without screening, about 20 percent of lung cancers were analyzed in early stages. This study suggested that sputum cytology and bronchoscopy are proficient for doing early diagnoses. It is advisable for lung cancer high risk patients to discuss with doctors if there think there is a need for them to screen themselves for lung cancer early symptoms or findings.
